Morrison County BPOU NEWSLETTER

January 2008

Happy New Year everyone! What a start to the election year with the surprising results that came out of the Iowa Caucuses, and the equally surprising results from the New Hampshire Primary. Iowa, thank you for temporarily removing the “inevitable” label from Hillary Clinton. Any setback for Mrs. Clinton’s campaign is a positive development for the country. Despite the Iowa speed bump however, Mrs. Clinton’s campaign was able to turn things around in just five days in New Hampshire. All of the media hype surrounding Barack Obama’s win in Iowa was quickly quieted by the Clintons. I still can’t believe there was talk over the weekend that Hillary was finished. There was speculation she would be dropping out of the race, she was out of money and donors were switching support to Obama, and her campaign was demoralized and facing major shakeups. All of that nonsense and “analysis” was put out there because she finished nine percentage points behind Obama in Iowa. One state and it’s over? Please. Hillary Clinton is the one to beat. She is the one who remains atop the national polls tracking the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. The impressive gains that Obama has made can be, and I believe will be, overwhelmed when Clinton captures the big states on February 5th. I hope I’m wrong. I hope Obama has created a wave that he is riding to the nomination, but I fear his campaign is more of a media creation than anything else – a good fight is good for the ratings. Just as quickly as the media had her down and out in Iowa, they have her back on the road to coronation.

Among Republicans Mike Huckabee got a bounce from Iowa, but it is John McCain who appears to be the biggest winner. Not only did Mr. McCain win the New Hampshire Primary in impressive fashion, his national support is now rivaling that of Rudy Giuliani. What a comeback for a campaign that appeared to be headed nowhere.

The Focus Issue this month is our Caucus Call and preparation.
