The State of Minnesota's revenue forecast was released as expected yesterday, and as expected it was much worse than the revenue shortfall projected in November. Try $935 million short! Even Democrats are saying the state's budget has to be cut. Seriously, that's how severe the shortfall is. The question now is, what to cut? The Republican Platform is full of planks that would be a good start.

It just keeps getting worse along the U.S. border with Mexico. Remember that fence that's suppose to be built in order to help "secure the border"? Well, Michelle Malkin is reporting the first phase of the fence is being delayed three years. Our government might have it up by the end of 2011, maybe not. The footdragging, the obstruction to the construction, it is ridiculous. Secure the border, enforce our laws!

Congratulations to District 16A State Rep. Sondra Erickson (R-Princeton) upon her appointment to the Minority Leader position on the House K-12 Finance Division Committee Tuesday. The appointment follows the demotion of Rep. Bud Heidgerken (R-Freeport) after he voted to overturn Governor Pawlenty's veto of the $6.6 billion transportation bill on Monday. We have to hold accountable Republicans who do not hold the line on taxation and government spending.

    (2/26/08)
The DFL-controlled legislature overrode Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty's veto of a $6.6 billion gas tax increase and increases in other transportation-related fees. There has been fallout. People, already hard pressed to make ends meet, will have an even harder time as a result of the DFL action. Taxpayers who are fed up will need to hold these legislators accountable in November.

Here's one of those stories that stop you in your tracks when you first hear of it. A former U.S. Navy sailor is facing court-martial for passing secrets to terrorist organizations while he was on active duty. His name: Hassan Abu-Jihaad. That must have been a very intersting security clearance investigation that Mr. Jihaad had to endure to gain access to Navy secrets.

Columnist Robert Novak is posing an interesting question in his column this week. Who in the Democratic Party can tell Hillary Clinton that her campaign is over? The answer is obvious: Bill Clinton.

    (2/19/08)
The Clinton Campaign has come up with a strategy that many may not find surprising. The Clinton campaign has apparently decided that it is within the Democratic Party rules for one candidate to go after another candidate's "pledged" delegates. The Clintons have decided it depends on your definition of "pledged." Yes, the Clintons are again struggling with definitions. They believe they can go after Barack Obama's pledged delegates if Hillary doesn't have enough delegates to gain the Democratic nomination for President.

Barack Obama is doing even better than the media is reporting. This story from New York City reports that Hillary Clinton was credited with a 118-0 win over Obama in one Brooklyn precinct. Upon recounting the ballots, it turns out the vote was 118-116. Obama may actually have won the precinct as the recount is still unofficial. The New York Post is reporting nearly 80 precincts recorded no votes for Obama in predominantly African-American areas of New York. This is something that needs to be investigated and fixed before the General Election.

The Minnesota legislature is back in session and, unfortunately, one of their first items of business was to approve putting a Sales Tax increase measure on the November ballot for us to vote up or down. If approved, the funds from this tax increase would be dedicated to the arts and outdoor programs. The problem here is that the measure changes the Minnesota Constitution to ensure a taxpayer funding source for arts programs. We must avoid tying the hands of future legislatures and governors in handling state finances. Wouldn't every special interest like to have dedicated funding from the state's sales tax? What argument would be used to say no to all of the other special interests that will seek similar arrangements if this tax hike passes? Let's shoot this idea down before it gets contagious.

It has been a bad week for conservatives. I'm not talking about John McCain becoming the presumptive Presidential nominee of the Republican Party. I'm talking about our President. We have a President who offered up a $3.1 TRILLION federal budget plan for FY2009. The budget has a deficit that exceeds $400 Billion going into negotiations with the Congress. The President said his budget plan projects the budget will be balanced by 2012. Where have we heard that before? Isn't it amazing how our "leaders" keep kicking the can down the road? Our leaders state sometime in the future we will have a balanced budget. Really? Was there something preventing the President from proposing a balanced budget this year? No. Instead, he has chosen to continue the irresponsible path of spend, spend, spend. We need to have a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution that forces our elected leaders to use fiscal restraint when formulating the federal budget. Right now there is no form of restraint whatsoever. It is inexcusable how the federal budget is currently handled.

There are some things that are going on in our federal government that are so shocking that it has become incomprehensible. A person just doesn't know where to turn to express their outrage. Here's something that Michelle Malkin is reporting that illustrates the point.

    (2/10/08)
Hillary Clinton's campaign is undergoing a shakeup. Her campaign manager "stepped down" Sunday, a day in which she lost to Barack Obama in Maine, her fourth primary or caucus loss of the weekend.

    (2/9/08)
You probably won't believe what you are about to read, but you need to ask yourself if the agenda that former Colorado Governor Richard Lamb promotes in this speech is already close to being achieved.

    (2/8/08)
Can Hillary Clinton lose -- with grace? Let's hope so.

Senator John McCain doesn't have the number of delegates to claim the Republican nomination for President, not yet anyway. So what are conservatives to do as they see the nomination going to someone who is viewed as liberal on key issues? If Senator McCain acquires the delegates needed to win the nomination he will deserve it. He will have demonstrated the ability to organize, campaign, debate, persuade, and win at the national level of politics. The first thing we conservatives need to do is take a deep breath and think this election through rationally. Stay tuned as we analyze the pros and cons of a John McCain nomination for President.

Mitt Romney ended his campaign for the Presidency today. His surprise announcement was made at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington. Mr. Romney's decision all but assures Senator John McCain of the Republican nomination for President.

    (2/6/08)
Well, Minnesota's caucuses have come and gone without much being decided. In Morrison County, 321 Republicans who turned out at the caucuses split their support among four candidates. Mitt Romney received 84 votes (26%), John McCain and Mike Huckabee each received 81 votes (25%), and Ron Paul received 71 votes (22%). There were four write-in votes. It was a large turnout and I thank everyone who participated. We will need your continued support as we head further into the campaign season. Statewide, Mitt Romney gained a solid win over John McCain. However, nationally McCain captured the big states of California and New York. He now has more than half of the delegates he needs to receive the Republican nomination for President.

Update: Berkeley might rescind letter to Marine Corps. Let's hope so. It is an embarrassment to have an American city declare the Marines aren't welcome.

    (2/4/08)
Would you be upset if your employer garnished your wages to pay for a health care plan? How upset would you be? Well, that is how Hillary Clinton plans to make sure everyone has health care. Her idea is to force you to pay for it.

    (2/3/08)
Congratulations to the New York Giants for their impressive 17-14 win over the prevously undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII (42). The Patriots were huge favorites being the first team to go 16-0 during the regular season, but they still play the game anyway because you never really know what's going to happen.

    (2/1/08)
Thank you Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) for being the first Senator to speak out about the outrageous action taken this week by the Berkeley City Council. Today Senator DeMint called for the suspension of all "earmarks" for Berkeley, Calif., after the city council voted to tell the U.S. Marine Corps to leave town -- The Marines aren't welcome in this U.S. city. Let's hope all of our U.S. Senators follow Senator DeMint's lead.

The voters in Pierz showed this week what they think of proposed tax increases -- no thanks! An overwhelming margin of 10:1 said no to a new city hall and library. Let's hope our state legislators keep in mind that our taxpayers are at their limit. They are being nickle and dimed to financial death. We have to lower the tax burden on our citizens. The citizens of Pierz have said enough!

    (2/1/08)
The Berkeley, California City Council has voted to kickout the U.S. Marine Corps. If you need anymore evidence that lunatic liberals are leading us down a path to destruction, this story should do it. Imagine a U.S. city telling the U.S. Marine Corps it isn't welcome. It has happened and we need to hear calls of outrage from our political leadership -- in both parties.
