The field of presidential candidates in both major parties continues to dwindle following last night's Florida Primary. Most surprising was Rudy Giuliani's exit after his third place finish with 15% of the vote. John McCain finished first with 36% of the vote followed by Mitt Romney's 31%. Giuliani today endorsed John McCain. Among Democrats, John Edwards finished a distant third and he announced today that he is withdrawing from the race. He has not endorsed anyone. The stage is set for a tumultuous "Super Tuesday" on February 5.

Congratulations to Barack Obama for his impressive win in the Democratic Primary in South Carolina. We wish him continued success as he attempts to gain the Democratic endorsement for President.
Among Republicans, the scramble is on to attract Fred Thompson's supporters after he withdrew from the race. It is "winner takes all" in Florida this coming Tuesday and the stakes are high for all of the candidates. McCain is surging across the country and has gained the endorsements of Florida's two top Republicans -- Governor Charlie Crist and Senator Mel Martinez. Mitt Romney is tied with McCain in Florida, if the poll numbers are to be believed. And, once front runner Rudy Giuliani has slipped to third place if those same polls are to be believed. If Super Tuesday on February 5 doesn't decide an obvious front runner, we're headed for a divided Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul in September.

And they're off. The starting gates have opened and the official part of the 2008 General Election race has begun. Rudy Giuliani has chosen to remain at the starting line waiting for the field to reach Florida before he takes off. His plan is to overtake the field in a single day on November 5. We'll have to see if that strategy works.
Hillary Clinton's two percentage point victory over Barack Obama in the New Hampshire Primary has the major media outlets expressing their disbelief at the great feat she pulled off. They must have forgotten that Mrs. Clinton had a 20 point lead in New Hampshire and nationwide over all of her Democratic opponents two months ago. She was able to hang on to a two-point win. The momentum is with Obama and hopefully he'll be able to extend the trend he is on. Unfortunately, John Kerry endorsed him this past week. An Al Gore endorsement might help Obama, but not John Kerry's. Hopefully, most people won't hear about that and Mr. Obama can continue his campaign towards the nomination.

The Democrats held a debate in Las Vegas tonight and as more light is shed on their candidates for President it appears it may be a slugfest for their nomination as much as it will be in the GOP. Credit CNN moderator Wolf Blitzer with not letting some of the candidates get away without answering some tough questions. Barack O'Bama tried it, but he was called on it. The question was, yes or no, do you support giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. Blitzer went down the line and achieved these answers: John Edwards - Yes; Christopher Dodd - No; Barack O'Bama - Yes; Hillary Clinton - Yes; Dennis Kucinich - Yes (and he took exception to the question); Bill Richardson - Yes (he has already done it as Governor of New Mexico); and Joe Biden - No.
Bill Richardson was asked, are human rights in Pakistan more important than our national security? His answer: Yes. Notice he also said he would give illegal immigrants drivers licenses. It sounds like a lethal combination.
On NAFTA, Hillary Clinton was asked, "Was NAFTA a mistake?" Yes or no? She said she doesn't remember much about that except that there were a bunch of charts. As a refresher, her husband championed NAFTA and now the unions are up in arms about it because of the loss of millions of jobs. It's not really a surprise that Mrs. Clinton doesn't remember much about it.

It was announced this morning that Al Gore will receive this year's Nobel Peace Prize for his "An Inconvenient Truth." He will jet off to Oslo, Norway in December to receive his $1.5 million dollar prize for helping inform the world that the Earth is warming. I put Mr. Gore's "discovery" in the same category as Columbus's achievement. Columbus gets credit for discovering a continent that was inhabited by millions of "natives." I would give Al Gore more credit if he had offered a presentation titled "A Comprehensive Truth." A comprehensive truth would give more weight to the natural causes behind global warmning. After all, the glaciers that covered much of North America thousands of years ago melted long before there were any man-made carbon-producing inventions. The fact the Nobel Prize Selection committee chose Al Gore for discovering the obvious simply diminishes the prestige of this award.

Barack Hussein O'Bama has quit wearing the U.S. flag as a lapel pin. His reason? He says he doesn't need a flag pin on his lapel to demonstrate his patriotism. True, but we anxiously await how he will demonstrate his patriotism. A good start would have been to denounce the MoveOn.org ad in the New York Times that questioned the loyalty of Army four-star General David Petraeus, something O'Bama has refused to do.

Hillary Clinton's idea of giving $5,000 bonds to newborn babies can only be viewed as an attempt to buy votes. We may need an auctioneer if her idea begins to get some traction. I can hear the auctioneer now: "I have five, five, do I have ten? Ten, ten, ten, I have ten! Do I have 15 . . .?" It's a ridiculous notion, but it does give voters an insight into how she thinks and what she's willing to do, which can be summarized as, "I, Hillary, will say and do anything to get elected, even if it puts the country in far greater financial peril than it is already."
