It has begun! Minnesota Senator Al Franken didn't take long to show he is going to be a jerk in the U.S. Senate. Forget the notion that he is now a serious person worthy of respect. Senator Franken berated T. Boone Pickens after a luncheon in D.C. Here's the story from Politico. Let's refresh our memories about the "Swift Boat" ads that helped defeat John Kerry in 2004. A group of distinguished Naval officers who served with John Kerry in Vietnam produced TV ads that were extraordinarily effective. They were effective because this group of outstanding American veterans came forth, stood up, and clearly stated that Kerry was not fit for command. There was no equivocation, their message was simply stated, and their faces were clearly shown on screen. T. Boone Pickens helped fund the airing of those ads and now Senator Franken has a problem with that. This comes a week after he gave Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor that horrible grilling about her favorite Perry Mason episode.

Democratic Michigan Rep. John Conyers found himself defending the practice in Washington of Congressmen not reading the legislation they are passing. We've all known this was going on, but what many of us never expected was a congressman actually defending the practice. Here's the story. Let's see if we can think about what Rep. Conyers said for a moment. The laws that are being passed in Congress are too big, too complex for anyone to understand, especially when given little or no time to read them (if a Congressman wanted to). So, these brainiacs are passing laws they haven't read. They don't know the detrimental effects of these laws until the unintended consequences emerge later. It is simply an embarrassment how this legislation is making it into law. The default vote should be "No' unless you have read the bill and understand its implications. We must simplify our government if we are to get back on track.

We must stop the needless scare tactics that are being used in Washington. We're again being told that if we don't do something, something horrible is going to happen. Of course I'm talking about another climate change threat. In this story it is mentioned that there are melting glaciers and that there will be water shortages. Has anyone thought of capturing the melting water before it reaches the oceans and transport that water to where shortages are occurring? Let's see, that would stop the oceans from rising, and water would be available where it is needed. It is called adpating to your situation. Could this be a new industry? I haven't heard a single word about that potential.

Wonderful news! The economy has been rescued, according to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), responded to the claim immediately -- Not so fast!

The Congressional Budget Office announced yesterday the path of the federal budget is unsustainable. Ya think? Here's the CBO Director's blog. I really hope this wasn't coming as news to the Senate Budget Committee.

Here's some more liberal logic to think through. Vice President Joe Biden said today, "We have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt." Yes, that is the problem for all those people who have declared bankruptcy in their lives -- they didn't spend enough money. What utter nonsense. We have to spend more to avoid bankruptcy? How about this thought? The faster we spend the quicker we will be in bankruptcy. Strip away partisan spinning for a moment and think about the logic of the VP's statement. Does it make sense to you?

President Obama, before you "fix" our entire healthcare system how about solving this problem. Who has the responsibility to care for these people in their situations? This is happening nationwide and it is breaking our healthcare system.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor begins her confirmation hearings today in Washington. Here's the story from the Associated Press. Unless something shocking is revealed during the hearings it is practically guaranteed that she will be confirmed to be an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. There are several comments she has made and rulings that she has made that require close scrutiny. She has an activist mind and appears willing to make laws from the bench versus interpreting laws passed by the legislative branch. Let's hope our Senators get assurances from her that she will properly interpret and enforce our laws and not create them.

Al Gore is seeking to establish global governance. There have been many indicators that this is the case. He is no longer denying that is his aim.

This may come as a surprise to many U.S. Catholics, but Newsweek magazine has found evidence that President Obama represents Catholic belief's better than the Pope. Here's how the magazine is reporting their findings.

There are a number of stories being reported today about President Obama's G8 summit meeting in Italy. Unfortunately, the stories aren't about the G8. They are about the President's apparent interest in a young woman. Here's a sample story from bild.com. I would ask the media, particularly the conservative talk radio hosts, to avoid this non-story. There are too many stories that need coverage. This isn't one of them.

Do you remember a couple of months ago when President Obama decided to brainstorm with his Cabinet to figure out ways to reduce the federal budget by $100 million, that's with an "M," not a "B" or "T." If you are looking for a visual as to how much $100 million is out of a $3.7 Trillion dollar budget, here's a video to give you some idea.

You may have heard Michael Jackson died. Great singer, great performer! He will be remembered in a public memorial today in Los Angeles. Here's the story.

California is a trend-setter. It is the state that other states look to for a glimpse of what probably lies ahead for the rest of us. It is the state that hosts major players in the movie and music industries, a trend-setter in pop culture. With over 30 million residents it is the state with the largest population. It is the state with the most environmental-wackos in the country. It is also broke. Because the state's legislators and Governor can't agree on how to make up a $24 Billion budget deficit, they will begin issuing IOUs to the state's vendors and contractors. These IOUs cannot be cashed in until October (maybe). How the recipients of these "IOUs" are suppose to pay their employees and suppliers isn't clear. What has also come to light is that the state's Constitution protects items in the state's budget from cuts: education and debt service. In otherwords, half of the state's budget is off the table in trying to solve a $24 Billion shortfall. This is a perfect example of the dangers that will be encountered when state constitutions are amended to ensure funding for special interests, similar to what Minnesotans approved last November.
