This is what it has come to: Pravda is lecturing its citizens about what it calls the fall of the United States and the reasons behind it. Here's the story as Pravda presented it. Although premature about our demise, many of the points that Pravda makes in its assessment are right on the money. The speed and intrusiveness with which our federal government has seized control of major sectors of our economy are unprecedented. It will take years, more likely decades, to undo what has been done in a matter of months. The amount of debt accumulated since October 2008 is incomprehensible. Pravda's commentary today puts it all in perspective. I wish I could say their assessment is wrong.

President Obama has nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. In a hilarious presentation she made the comment that courts make policy. Listen to her comments in her own words. Then laugh along as she winks and nods and says the courts don't make law. The courts have been trampling on the Legislative branches of this country for decades, and now they have a nominee who sees it as her role to make policy. One other item of interest. Judge Sotomayor believes it is acceptable to look outside the United States for "guidance" in interpreting our laws. As Judge Sotomayor goes through the confirmation process I hope she is put on record as confirming her only source of guidance in interpreting our laws will be the U.S. Constitution.

It is official -- our country is broke. President Obama made it official yesterday. Our federal government has already spent everything it expected to take in this year in tax revenue. It is now borrowing (when it can) to fund its programs through the remainder of this fiscal year. If it can't borrow the money, it simply prints it. What is the problem and how do we solve it? We have more government than we can afford. We should be asking the question, "How can one entity that is broke bailout other entities that are broke?" It isn't possible. Somebody is getting ripped off. Our financial future is bleak. Some day our "leaders" might actually get around to addressing the truly broken programs of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. The timeline when these programs are projected to run out of funds is getting shorter and the government's ability to fix them is being drastically reduced by budget deficits and crushing national debt. Too few in Washington and St. Paul seem to have the ability to identify the proper roles of government. They don't properly prioritize and identify the public's basic needs. Our government continues to grow and grow. Even when you hear about "cuts" it usually means the government won't grow as fast as some people want it to. Cuts usually mean growing at 5% instead of 7%. They try and fund everything. The bottomline is we can't fund everything.

Thank you Dick Cheney! Yesterday former Vice President Dick Cheney came to the defense of the Bush Administration and its handling of national security the past eight years. The defense comes five years late, but late is better than never. Here's the story . . . Republicans may not have experienced such devastating losses in the 2006 and 2008 elections if we had heard President Bush and Vice President Cheney defending the decisions they made following 9/11. They gave initiative to their critics (and there are many). Now, after years of being beaten over the head with the liberal left's take on events, we're hearing more and competent defense of Bush Administration policies and actions. It is about time. The country has not been attacked since 9/11 and that is no accident.

It has happened again. Clinton-era files are missing from the National Archives. Bloomberg has the story. It hasn't been reported if Sandy Berger has been asked if he knows anything about the missing documents.

You may have heard liberal Democrats claiming the American people want to pay higher taxes for more government. Well, the people of California went to the polls yesterday to vote on the question, "Do you want higher taxes or less government?" The answer, by a 2:1 margin, was do not raise taxes! Here's the story . . . For some strange reason this is coming as a surprise to liberals. California is the "bluest" state in the country and even the voters there have had enough of big government. So, the next time you hear people are willing to pay higher taxes for government services, think of the people of California who just said no to increasing the tax burden.

Republicans need a mutiny. That's the view of conservative Richard Vigueri. . .
Governor Pawlenty has announced that there won't be a special session in the legislature this year. Here's the story...

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is showing us in dramatic fashion what is wrong with the Republican Party. To quote Secretary Powell in a National Journal article, "The Republican Party is in deep trouble. The party must realize that the country has changed. . . Americans do want to pay taxes for services. Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less." Americans are looking for more government? Really? The hundreds of thousands of people who turned out for "Tea Parties" across the country April 15th had their signs all wrong? Our party has become cluttered with Powell's thinking. Until we de-clutter our party, we will not offer much of an alternative to Democrats.

George Orwell would be proud. It is truly "Orwellian" when someone can say, "We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits don't matter and waste is not our problem. We can no longer afford to leave the hard choices for the next budget, the next administration -- or the next generation," and then turn around and do exactly what you said we can't afford to do. That is what President Obama said and did today. Here's the story from the Washington Post . . .

The glimmers of hope we're hearing about in the U.S. economy are going to be dashed this week. On Thursday the Treasury Department is going to release some of the results of the "stress tests" that were applied to the 19 biggest banks in the U.S. The results that will be released will, most likely, be quite positive considering the state of the economy and what the country has been through in recent months. The problem will be what the Treasury Department doesn't release. Major U.S. banks are teetering on insolvency and the only answer that anyone in power seems capable of deriving is: More taxpayer money! Brace yourselves for the next round of bank bailouts. As we learn in this commentary, bailouts can't continue forever.

A story that isn't getting much attention, make that no attention, in the main stream media is the tactics the Obama's Auto Industry Task Force was allegedly using to get concessions from Chyrsler Corporation creditors in order to avoid bankruptcy. I guess they were making an offer they thought the creditors couldn't refuse.

There are more indicators out there about where we might be headed as a society. Let's look to the UK to see how they're handling diversity, free speech, free association, and debate about issues of the day. Is this our future in the U.S.?

Forget Ronald Reagan? Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is quoted as making that comment. Here's the story. That isn't the problem with the GOP. The problem is we have forgotten Ronald Reagan and his principles. If there is one thing we can all be certain of is there won't be any more Bushes in the White House. Bush, Sr. and "W" have pretty much guaranteed Jeb won't have a chance if he runs for President. If Jeb's comments are indicative of the thinking at the senior levels of the GOP it is going to take even longer than I thought to re-build this party. Do you see any liberals saying, "Forget FDR!"?
